What it is

An apology addressed to Marcus Aurelius, reporting the Thundering Legion whose prayers were said to have broken a drought on campaign, together with the first written attack on the new prophecy spreading through Phrygia.

Why it lasted

The opening shot of the Montanist controversy, and a case study in how quickly a bishop turned to writing when a movement he could not control appeared in the next valley.
