The Colloquies

Colloquia Familiaria

Desiderius Erasmus · c. 1466–1536

What it is

Dialogues written to teach schoolboys Latin, which grew into satires on pilgrimages, relics, monastic vows, soldiering, and arranged marriage.

Why it lasted

A Latin textbook that became one of the most subversive books of the century, condemned by the Sorbonne and read in every school anyway.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
