What it is
A philosophical letter to disciples, arguing that the three opinions about the world — chance, providence, and fate — are all wrong, and setting out instead an unbegotten Father and the immortal beings unfolding from him.
Why it lasted
Contains nothing distinctively Christian at all, and was later rewritten as the Sophia of Jesus Christ by inserting the apostles as questioners. The two texts side by side show a gnostic tradition being converted into a Christian one line by line.
