The German Mass and Order of Service
Deutsche Messe
Martin Luther · 1483–1546
What it is
A vernacular order of service with hymns in place of the ordinary chants, and a preface hoping that a third form might one day gather those serious about being Christians.
Why it lasted
The model for Protestant vernacular worship, and its wistful preface has been quoted by every later movement for a gathered church.
Where to read it
This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.
These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
