What it is
A history of the last Byzantine century culminating in the fall of Constantinople, written by a Greek in Genoese service with painful sympathy for both sides.
Why it lasted
The most emotionally powerful of the accounts of 1453, including the lament that Greeks preferred the turban to the Latin mitre.
