The Hittite chancery
What it is
Treaties between a great king and his vassals, all built to one pattern: the king names himself, recites the history of what he has already done for the vassal, states the stipulations, orders the tablet deposited in the temple and read aloud periodically, calls the gods to witness, and lists the blessings and curses.
Why it lasted
That pattern is the structure of Deuteronomy, in order and almost without omission. The discovery reframed the covenant as a legal instrument in a known international form rather than a religious metaphor.
