What it is
Twenty books retelling the whole of Jewish history from creation to the eve of the revolt, for Greek and Roman readers. Along the way it mentions John the Baptist, James the brother of Jesus, and — in a passage every scholar since the Renaissance has argued over — Jesus himself.
Why it lasted
The single most cited non-Christian source for the world of the New Testament, and the reason the Testimonium Flavianum has its own literature.
