The Life of Basil the Younger

What it is
A holy man in Constantinople, and two long visions granted to his servant Theodora: her soul's passage after death through twenty aerial toll-houses where demons produce a ledger of every sin by category, and a vision of the last judgement.
Why it lasted
The fullest ancient account of the toll-house teaching, which remains a live and contested question in Orthodox theology. It also preserves an eyewitness date for the Rus attack of 941.
