Against Asterius
Marcellus of Ancyra · c. 285 – c. 374
What it is
A defender of Nicaea who defended it too far: the Word was in God from eternity but became Son only at the incarnation, and at the end will be reabsorbed, so that the kingdom of Christ has a term. Eusebius wrote two books against him.
Why it lasted
The clause and of his kingdom there shall be no end was put into the creed of 381 to exclude this book. Marcellus is the reason a line about the end of time sits in the Nicene Creed at all.
