Anastasius the Disciple
What it is
A transcript taken by Maximus's own disciple. Charged with treason for losing Egypt to the Arabs, he answers the political charges first and then the real one. Told that all the patriarchs have accepted the Typos, he replies that if the whole world communicated with them, he alone would not.
Why it lasted
One of the great documents of conscience against authority, and unusual in preserving the prosecution's arguments fairly. Maximus was tried again, had his tongue and right hand cut off so he could neither speak nor write, and died in exile in 662.
