Men Before Adam
Prae-Adamitae
Isaac La Peyrère · 1596–1676
What it is
An argument that there were people before Adam, that Genesis records only the origin of the Jews, and that the flood was local rather than universal.
Why it lasted
Burned publicly and its author forced to recant before the pope, it opened questions about the age of the earth and the unity of humanity that would not close.
Where to read it
This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.
These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
