The Names of Christ

De los Nombres de Cristo

Luis de León · 1527–1591

What it is

Three friars by a river discuss the names scripture gives Christ — shepherd, mountain, father of the age to come — in prose of great deliberate beauty.

Why it lasted

A monument of Spanish prose, written by a Hebrew scholar of converso descent whom the Inquisition had imprisoned for four years for preferring the Hebrew text.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
