What it is
Everything a bishop performs, gathered in one book: ordinations, the consecration of churches and of kings, the blessing of an abbot, exorcisms, the ordeals by hot iron and by water, and the rite for expelling penitents on Ash Wednesday.
Why it lasted
Carried to Rome by the Ottonian emperors and adopted there, so a German compilation became the Roman Pontifical and remained the basis of Catholic episcopal liturgy until the twentieth century. Its coronation rite shaped how European kings were made.
