What it is
A collection of oracles presented as evidence for theology, including one in which Hecate declares that Christ was a most pious man whose soul is immortal, and that the Christians err by worshipping him.
Why it lasted
The most conciliatory pagan position on Jesus to survive — concede the man, deny the cult — quoted at length by Eusebius and Augustine precisely because it was harder to answer than abuse.
