What it is

Ten books arguing that every heresy is a Greek philosophy in disguise, with long quotations from the systems described and a bitter account of the Roman church under Callistus.

Why it lasted

A treasure house of otherwise lost Gnostic and philosophical texts, and the frankest surviving picture of a third-century church quarrel.
