What it is
James speaks from the temple steps and reports that the Lord embraced and kissed him and called him beloved, then is thrown down, stoned, and crushed with a fuller's club while praying for his killers.
Why it lasted
An independent account of the death of James the Just, closer in outline to Hegesippus than to Josephus, from a community that made him rather than Peter the guarantor of the tradition.
