What it is
A patriarch's attempt to reunite an empire split by Chalcedon: stop arguing about one energy or two, he rules, and simply confess one will in Christ. The letter to Rome presents this as a settled peace and asks for agreement.
Why it lasted
The founding document of Monothelitism, drafted as a diplomatic solution rather than a theology. It is the clearest case in this catalogue of a doctrine adopted because it would hold an empire together.
