Clement of Alexandria · c. 150–c. 215

What it is

Deliberately unsystematic notebooks arguing that philosophy was God's covenant with the Greeks as the law was with the Jews, and sketching the true gnostic — the mature Christian whom knowledge makes loving rather than superior.

Why it lasted

The founding text of Christian intellectual culture, and the reason Alexandria rather than Rome became the early church's university.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
