The Canons of the Council of Vienne

The Council of Vienne

Read elsewhere

What it is

The council that suppressed the Templars, ruled on Franciscan poverty, condemned propositions attributed to the beguines, and ordered chairs of Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic in the universities.

Why it lasted

Its language chair decree is the first European legislation for the systematic study of oriental languages; its condemnation of the beguines drove a movement underground.

Where to read it

Public domain and free to read in full, though not held here. The archives below have it.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
