What it is
The council that suppressed the Templars, ruled on Franciscan poverty, condemned propositions attributed to the beguines, and ordered chairs of Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic in the universities.
Why it lasted
Its language chair decree is the first European legislation for the systematic study of oriental languages; its condemnation of the beguines drove a movement underground.
