The Condemnation of 219 Propositions

Stephen Tempier · d. 1279

What it is

A bishop of Paris condemns two hundred and nineteen propositions taught in the arts faculty, including several that limited what God could have done.

Why it lasted

It forced theologians to insist that God could have made the world otherwise — an emphasis on divine freedom that historians credit with opening the way to later natural science.

Where to read it

Public domain and free to read in full, though not held here. The archives below have it.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
