The Consolation of Theology

Jean Gerson · 1363–1429

What it is

Written in exile after Constance in imitation of Boethius, on how to keep hope when reform has failed and the church one worked for looks no better.

Why it lasted

The most personal document of the conciliar generation — a man who had ended a schism and could not go home.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
