What it is
The archbishop of Toledo, under Muslim rule, argues that Christ as man is Son of God by adoption rather than by nature — using liturgical language his own Spanish books had used for centuries — and turns furiously on Beatus for saying otherwise.
Why it lasted
Spanish Adoptionism, condemned at Frankfurt in 794. Whether Elipandus was a heretic or an old Spanish idiom colliding with a new Frankish orthodoxy is still argued, and the quarrel is the reason Charlemagne's court got into the business of defining doctrine.
