The Gospel of the Ebionites

What it is
Known from seven passages in Epiphanius. It begins not with a birth but with John the Baptist, whose locusts have become honey-cakes, and has Jesus say he came to abolish sacrifice — and that if you do not stop sacrificing, wrath will not stop for you.
Why it lasted
The gospel of a community that kept the law, rejected the temple cult, held Jesus to be a man chosen at his baptism, and ate no meat. It shows how wide the range of Jewish Christianity still was a century in.
