What it is
A hundred and six short chapters on relics and what they did: oil that flowed, a candle that would not go out, thieves struck down, and a Jewish man who took an icon and was found out by the blood it wept.
Why it lasted
The clearest window into what sixth-century Gaul actually believed and practised, as distinct from what its bishops wrote in treatises. Gregory reports each story with its source, which makes it usable as evidence rather than only as devotion.
