What it is
Written in exile to the bishops of Gaul, setting out every Eastern creed of the previous thirty years in turn and asking, of each, whether it can be read in an orthodox sense. He is unusually willing to grant that men who reject his vocabulary may hold his faith.
Why it lasted
The book that explained the Eastern bishops to the Latin West and made the settlement of 381 possible, by arguing that a quarrel over words was not necessarily a quarrel over God. Jerome noted that both sides disliked it.
