What it is
Written specifically to answer Porphyry, who had argued that Daniel was composed in the second century BC by someone describing events already past. Jerome reproduces the argument at length before rejecting it, and treats the fourth kingdom as Rome and the little horn as Antichrist.
Why it lasted
The main surviving channel for Porphyry's case, which Jerome preserved by refuting it — and which is now the standard scholarly reading. It is also the commentary every later Western treatment of the four kingdoms is built on.
