What it is
Eighteen books on Isaiah, the largest of Jerome's commentaries, giving the Hebrew and the Septuagint side by side wherever they differ and reporting the Jewish readings he had been taught before dismissing most of them.
Why it lasted
The source of the line that became the church's charter for biblical study — ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of Christ — and the fullest record of how a fourth-century Christian scholar actually used Jewish learning.
