What it is

A study of angels, demons and the state of the dead, with charts of the unseen orders as Larkin understood them. Larkin drew his own charts and they carry the argument: the books were printed around them, and readers came to them for the diagrams as much as the prose.

Why it lasted

The least systematic of Larkin's books and the most speculative, and included for that reason: it shows how far the method was carried beyond the passages that prompted it.
