What it is
Letters smuggled out of Tegel prison to family and to his friend Eberhard Bethge, mixing ordinary requests with the fragmentary late thinking about a world come of age and what Christ actually is for us today.
Why it lasted
Published posthumously and immediately contested, these fragments set the agenda for a great deal of post-war theology — much of it in directions their author never lived to endorse or refuse.
