What it is
A Huguenot noblewoman's account, written for her son, of escaping the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre with a small child and of thirty years of flight and exile.
Why it lasted
One of the few first-hand narratives of the French wars of religion by a woman, and a rare domestic view of a persecuted minority.
