On Heretics and Those Who Burn Them
Balthasar Hubmaier · c. 1480–1528
What it is
Thirty-six short theses arguing that heretics are to be won by argument and not by fire, and that those who burn them are the greater heretics.
Why it lasted
The earliest Reformation plea for religious toleration. Its author was burned in Vienna four years later.
Where to read it
This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.
These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
