Monodies

De Vita Sua

Guibert of Nogent · c. 1055–c. 1124

What it is

An abbot's account of his mother, his own sexual temptations and bad dreams, a murdered bishop, and a communal revolt at Laon, written in imitation of Augustine.

Why it lasted

The most psychologically revealing autobiography between Augustine and the Renaissance, and unusually frank about family and fear.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
