What it is
An attempt to settle Chalcedon by defining the terms philosophically: nature means a particular thing, not a general kind, so two natures would mean two individuals. Pressed to its conclusion by his opponents, the same logic made the Trinity three particulars.
Why it lasted
The most rigorous Christological argument of the century, and the one that got its author condemned as a tritheist by the side he was defending. A demonstration of what happens when Aristotle is applied to the Trinity without remainder.
