What it is
Written in answer to a request from the Jews of Spain for the order of prayers for the whole year, setting out the daily, sabbath, and festival services with the legal rulings that govern them.
Why it lasted
The oldest complete Jewish prayer book, and the point at which the liturgy stopped being transmitted by memory and local custom. Every later siddur, Sephardi and Ashkenazi alike, descends from it.
