The Reformation · 1529

The Small Catechism

Martin Luther · 1483–1546

What it is

The commandments, creed, Lord's Prayer, and sacraments explained in the simplest possible terms, each section beginning with the question: what does this mean?

Why it lasted

Written after Luther toured the villages and found the people knew nothing at all. It has taught Lutherans their faith for five centuries.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
