What it is

Short addresses given to the Stoudios community three times a week, mostly about the ordinary difficulty of the life: the brother who resents the kitchen, the temptation to think one's own work more important, and what to do with a superior's decision you believe to be wrong.

Why it lasted

The most detailed record of how a large Byzantine monastery actually ran, from the abbot who reorganised Eastern monasticism around common life and manual labour. The Stoudite rule shaped Athos, and through Athos the Slavic monasteries.
