What it is

A female voice speaks entirely in contradictions: the first and the last, the honoured and the scorned, the whore and the holy one, the barren woman with many sons. There is no narrative and no cosmology, only the paradoxes.

Why it lasted

Unlike anything else that survives from antiquity, Christian or otherwise, and the strongest evidence that gnostic communities produced poetry meant to be recited rather than only systems meant to be learned.
