What it is
An Armenian noble house chronicled from Adam to the writer's own day under Arab rule, with an eyewitness account of the invasions, the sieges, and the building of the church of the Holy Cross at Aghtamar, described stone by stone.
Why it lasted
The best contemporary account of Armenia under the caliphate, and the only description of Aghtamar by someone who watched it go up — a church whose exterior reliefs are the finest surviving medieval Armenian sculpture.
