Utopia

Thomas More · 1478–1535

What it is

A traveller describes an island commonwealth with no private property, six-hour working days, married priests, euthanasia, and toleration of every religion but atheism.

Why it lasted

It named a genre and has been claimed ever since by socialists, Catholics, and satirists alike — its author never explains which parts he meant.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
