What it is

Fifty sermons for the monastic year at Jarrow, each taking the day's gospel line by line and turning it to the life the monks were actually living — short, plain, and built to be read aloud rather than studied.

Why it lasted

Paul the Deacon put a large number of them into the homiliary Charlemagne prescribed for the whole empire, so these sermons were read in churches across Europe for the next seven centuries.
