What it is
The voice of the spiritual eagle sounds in the ears of the church. Eriugena reads the prologue as the whole of theology in fourteen verses, with creation as God's self-utterance and the incarnation as the same Word said again in flesh.
Why it lasted
The most beautiful thing Eriugena wrote and the most read, because it circulated for centuries under the names of Origen and Jerome — which is how a condemned philosopher went on being read in monasteries that would have burned the Periphyseon.
