What it is
Three hundred and forty-eight passages cut from Augustine and arranged for monks who would never see the originals, made at a monastery near Naples by the abbot who also wrote the Life of Severinus.
Why it lasted
How most of the Middle Ages actually met Augustine — not in his books but in anthologies like this one, which decided which Augustine got transmitted. It also preserves readings from manuscripts now lost.
