The Life of Ulrich of Augsburg

What it is
The bishop who organised the defence of Augsburg against the Magyars in 955 and rode out among the walls in his stole, written by a priest of his household who had watched him work.
Why it lasted
Ulrich was canonised by John XV in 993, the first saint declared by a pope rather than by local acclamation. This book was the evidence, so it is the document that begins the papal monopoly on making saints.
