The Josippon

What it is

Jewish history from Adam to the fall of Masada, built out of a Latin Josephus and other sources and written as though by Josephus himself. It reorders, adds, and quietly removes the passage about Jesus.

Why it lasted

For most Jews of the Middle Ages this was Josephus, and it stayed in print in Hebrew and Yiddish into the twentieth century. Christian Hebraists read it too, and its differences from the Greek Josephus fuelled centuries of argument about the Testimonium.
