What it is
Twenty-eight sermons on the wilderness, above all on the list of forty-two stopping places in chapter thirty-three, each read as a stage the soul passes through on its way out of Egypt.
Why it lasted
The origin of the itinerary as a spiritual form — the numbered stages of ascent that every later mystical writer, from Gregory of Nyssa to Bonaventure and Teresa, would build on.
