What it is
Eight books on Justinian's campaigns in Persia, Africa, and Italy, by the secretary who accompanied Belisarius through most of them — including the fullest ancient description of a pandemic, the plague that reached Constantinople in 542.
Why it lasted
The last classical history and the best narrative source for the sixth century. Its plague account, written by a witness who counted the dead, is the model every later chronicler of an epidemic imitated.
