Now Thank We All Our God

Nun danket alle Gott

Martin Rinkart · 1586–1649

What it is

A hymn of thanksgiving written by the only surviving pastor in a walled town during the Thirty Years' War, where he buried some four thousand people.

Why it lasted

Sung at national thanksgivings ever since by people mostly unaware it was composed in the middle of a plague and a siege.

Where to read it

This work is in the public domain and can be read in full, free, at the archives below. The Library catalogues it; it does not host the text.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
