In the monastery every occasion of presumption should be avoided. We ordain that no one shall be allowed to excommunicate or strike any of his brethren

unless the abbot has given him authority to do so,

Those who offend in this matter shall be reprehended before all, that the rest may be inspired with fear. But over children, till they are fifteen years old, let all exercise strict discipline and care, yet this also must be done with moderation and discretion. He, however, who shall presume to do so to those above this age, without the abbot’s order, or shall be severe to children beyond discretion, shall be subjected to regular discipline, since it is written, What thou wouldst not

have done to thyself, do not thou to another.?04
