The Rule of Saint Benedict

Let the duty of giving warning of the time of the Divine Office, both night and day, be that of the abbot. Either he himself shall give the signal or he shallassign this task to some careful brother, so that all things be done at their fixed time. After the abbot those appointed are to intone the psalms and antiphons in turns. No one, however, shall presume either to sing or read except such as can do so to the

edification of the hearers. Let him to whom the
