The Rule of Saint Benedict

Ir the community be large let brethren of good repute and holy lives be chosen from amongst them and appointed deans. These shall carefully watch over their deaneries in all things relating to the commandments of God and the injunctions of the abbot. Deans are to be chosen on whom the abbot may safely rely to share his burdens, and the choice is not to be determined by their order (in the community) but by the worthiness of their lives and their proved learning. And if perchance any one of these deans, being puffed up by pride, be found blameworthy, and after being thrice corrected will not amend, then let him be put out of office and another more worthy be substituted. We direct the same in

the case of the Provost.
